First Signs of IIH

Living with Pseudotumor Cerebri or Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) I needed to further understand the symptoms of IIH. These symptoms over time, if left untreated can lead to further complications and possible hospitalization. IIH's most common symptoms are blurred vision, double vision, headaches, irritability and balance issues.

Blurred Vision

Everyone's symptoms are similar but can vary in severity. Blurred vision is when your current vision is no longer clear but fuzzy, distorted, or a smokescreen effect. Below is an example picture of what blurred vision could look like;

Double Vision

 When pressure continues to increase in the brain it puts pressure on the optic nerve which can cause eye-sight to dwindle. If left untreated it can cause permanent eye damage. Below is an example image of what Double Vision could look like;

Balance

This is symptom unlike blurred and double vision, balance is not that common for IIH however when pressure and/or fluid starts to build-up in the brain it can put pressure on the cerebellum. The cerebellum is located on the back of your head below the cerebrum. When pressure increases it can cause different parts of the brain to become compressed leading to symptoms such as balance issues. However, the cerebellum under pressure can lead to more than just balance problems. The cerebellum controls muscle movement, balance, and coordination.

Headaches and Irritability

Unfortunately, no one likes headaches. I certainly don't, however, when diagnosed with this condition it is the most common symptom. When the headaches occur it causes irritability. My headaches don't last just a few minutes, they are all day headaches. As the pressure increases the headaches get worse and last a lot longer. The stronger the pressure turns me into a royal bitch half the time and no one likes me at that point. I call them IIH Headaches or IIHH for short. When these headaches occur the only thing I can do is lie down to help relieve some of the pressure. However, when the pressure becomes too high, even lying down doesn't help which leads to irritability, unable to sleep, and fatigue.

Tinnitus

This symptom is annoying and debilitating in and of itself. Ringing, whooshing sounds, buzzing, and many others are just some of the noises that come from having this condition.
